Changing the color of an Aqua Computer Aquaero VFD display

By craigbru

I recently received an Aquaero with a VFD display as part of my upcoming OSIDIAS project. One of the biggest reasons I chose the VFD version over it’s LCD counterpart, was the ability to easily change the display color. With OSIDIAS, I wanted to match the case accent colors, which happen to be orange. What you are about to see will show you how simple the color mod can be. The best part, is that it doesn’t have to be specific to the Aquaero. Any VFD display can be changed almost as easily, regardless of the manufacturer.

To begin, you really only need two things. A VFD display, and a transparent piece of mylar or plastic film in the color of your choice. If you’ve got a local craft or hobby store, you could likely find the plastic there. However, if you are just purchasing the Aquaero for the first time, it is just as easy to add Aqua Computer’s version to the order.

A second part I ordered, was a plexiglass display cover. This part adds an extra layer of protection to the VFD screen and plastic film. Not only that, but it makes the display opening sit flush with the front of the Aquaero.

Now, adding the film is just a matter of removing the Aquaero faceplate and setting it in place.

The plexiglass cover is next…

Then the faceplate gets put back in place, and you’re all set!

Here you can clearly see the VFD’s original green lighting showing behind the faceplate.

However, from the front, it looks quite different. Although this particular picture makes the display looks slightly amber, it is indeed orange when viewed in person. All in all, the end result is exactly what I was hoping for. If only all mods were that simple!

Could we not find Mylar in local stores like art supply or Michael’s or Hobby Lobby? How about tinted Mylar balloons? too thin? I have some Mylar gels for photo lights – same stuff?

Yes, any transparent mylar should work as long as it’s of good quality. Gels for photo lights might actually work pretty well. It was pretty inexpensive to get the film added to my existing order, but if you’ve already got a VFD display, you are definitely better off sourcing locally.
