Hive Logix mini-ITX Case Review

By craigbru

These days when it comes to technology and hardware, it seems everyone wants things to be smaller. Whether it’s due to space constraints, potential cost savings, or in some attempt to be kinder to the environment. Whatever the reason, the market is becoming flooded with low power and compact hardware. Netbooks and iPads will be as ubiquitous as ever for the foreseeable future. Yet, despite motherboard and hardware manufacturers putting out smaller and smaller components, one segment of the market looks to be under-served. Case manufacturer PC Design Labs has recently launched branding under the Hive Logix name, and aims to change that.

PC Design Labs earned it’s solid reputation a few years back with it’s innovative and hardware friendly Qmicra case, which has been constantly refined to it’s current state. A lot of that refinement has come from user input, as founder Dave LaLopa is constantly listening to the community. After all, there’s no better quality control accounting, than from a person who’s spent their own hard earned money on one of your products.

With a solid and successful case design in the Qmicra, and a newly developing market, Hive Logix has introduced a new mini-ITX case. That new case is the product I’ll be reviewing today.

Thanks Bill! It really is a great little box. There’s definitely going to be more than one in my home. I need a few boxes for media streaming, and these are perfect.

    Nice review craig!

I see only one real shortcoming for a would-be HTPC user and that is the lack of any support for any sort of optical drive, even a slim-line one.

Granted, this may not be its primary focus and there are other case on the market that do provide this.

Otherwise, I really like the layout and simple, clean design.

Thanks all! For HTPC… we offer a variety of external USB drives including slim optical…

    Very nice box!

how about support for mini-itx expansion cards (pcie 1x, etc.)? it would either add some to the height or neccessitate readjusting the rear fans.

i have a dg45fc and am looking to export the sata ports to multilane esata for external hdd storage. i cant find any information as to whether ich10 supports esata multilane so i’m looking to use an adapter to provide this.

i’m already going to have to mod the case to support my ir-receiver (using the intel cir header) so i could just also mod the case for a multilane adapter plate.
